FCC Aqualia S.A. is the company in the FCC Group managing all the activities regarding the integral cycle of water.

FCC is the leading public services group in Spain, present in 5 continents and employing close to 100,000 people in 52 countries throughout the world. FCC Aqualia´s activity comprises 3 major areas among which it creates synergies in knowledge, research and methodology:

  1. Management of public water services.
  2. Design and construction of hydraulic infrastructures and treatment plants.
  3. Global solutions for the use of water in industry.

Through these different business areas, FCC Aqualia offers adequate social, technical and financial responses to any use of water management: human, agricultural and industrial consumption. In Spain, FCC Aqualia is serving about 1000 municipalities with 13 Million people, and has international activities focusing on Portugal, Italy and the Czech Republic as well as Latin America. Design-Build-Operate Contracts for major water and wastewater infrastructure are currently being executed in Algeria, Bosnia, Chile, China, Egypt, Mexico, Montenegro and Rumania.

In the field of algae use for water and energy, FCC Aqualia is coordinator of the Algae to Biofuel project www.all-gas.eu , which includes the anaerobic digestion of wastewater with Upflow Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment. Moreover, FCC Aqualia is working on submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors in the projects LIFE Memory and Innpronta IISIS (supported by CDTI). On industrial wastewaters, FCC Aqualia is testing anaerobic bioreactors with ceramic membranes in the project Innpacto Filene (MINECO).

Furthermore, FCC Aqualia also develops R&D activities in various relevant Spanish projects related to improve water quality and sustainability: ANAMMOX Vigo (Xunta de Galicia y CDTI), MBR Relleno Vigo (Xunta de Galicia), Innpronta ITACA (CDTI) and Innpacto DOWNSTREAM (MINECO).
